I just read an article that stated that among young “evangelicals” more than 40% support gay marriage.  And I wonder how this can be?  Other than the obvious answer that not all who say that they are evangelicals are in fact evangelicals.  In other words, many in the church call themselves by His Name but are not actually born again.  The tares among the wheat, the goats among the sheep.  But surely that number is not as high as 40+% is it??  So what other reason can there be?

 

I think it’s a lack of recognizing the Scriptures as our sole authority in all matters.  It is an under appreciation for the infallible Word and it’s absolute reign over our lives.  People dismiss the warnings of Scripture or seek out some alternative meaning.  How did this happen?  How did it come to this, in light of the utmost importance the church has always placed on Scripture?

 

For instance:

 

1689 Baptist Confession of Faith:  “The Holy Scripture is the only sufficient, certain, and infallible rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience…..The supreme judge, by which all controversies of religion are to be determined, and by which must be examined all decrees of councils, opinions of ancient writers, and doctrines of men and private spirits can be no other than the Holy Scripture, delivered by the Spirit. And in the sentence of Scripture we are to rest, for it is in Scripture, delivered by the Spirit, that our faith is finally resolved.”

 

Westminster Confession of Faith:  “The supreme judge by which all controversies of religion are to be determined, and all decrees of councils, opinions of ancient writers, doctrines of men, and private spirits, are to be examined, and in whose sentence we are to rest, can be no other but the Holy Spirit speaking in the Scripture.”

 

In the old church, men reverenced the Scriptures.  They accepted the Word of God as the LITERAL WORD OF GOD!  Not to be messed with.  Not to be taken lightly.  But today, everyone is quick to dismiss the Scriptures when they don’t match up with their preconceived ideas.  They seek out a “twisting” of the Scripture that will allow them to maintain their false ideas.  God speaks clearly on the idea of homosexuality.  God is equally clear on marriage.  You cannot get around what He has to say about these topics, unless you are willing to rebel against the clear Word of God.  In which case, HOW CAN YOU CALL YOURSELF HIS??

 

Our ideas are fallen.  OUR thoughts are tainted by selfish desire and sin.  But God stands apart from that and speaks in Authority.  What He says is ROCK SOLID.  It stands.  Regardless of how we “feel” about it or what we “want” to be true.  He is Truth and the only way to survive is to bow down to His Truths, not to succumb to the pressures of society and twist God’s Word to our own destruction.  God means what He says.
